After her feature film debut in 2001 with Ishtam, she gained Telugu cinema's attention in 2002 by playing the role of Bhanu in Santhosham,[2] her first commerical success. Subsequently, she appeared in several Telugu films with prominent actors, whilst, also making in-roads in the Hindi film industry as well as the Tamil film industry. In 2007, Saran gained nationwide fame after her performance alongside Rajinikanth in Sivaji: The Boss,[3][4] after which she signed a Hollywood film and several Hindi and Tamil films.

Saran performs predominantly in lead roles in high-budget and major studio films, ranging from romantic comedies and drama to science fiction and action thrillers. Following commercial successes with Santhosham (2002)[5], Tagore (2003),[6] Sivaji: The Boss (2007)[7][8] which became the highest grossing Tamil film at that time,[9][10][11] and Kanthaswamy (2009)[12][13][14] she established herself as one of the leading actresses in the South Indian film industry.[15] Her other major box office film which established her career is Nuvve Nuvve (2002),[16][17] Nenunnanu (2003)[18][19][20], Chatrapathi (2005)[21][22] which earned her a Filmfare nomination for best actress in Telugu and Don Seenu (2010), Thiruvilayadal Arambam (2006),[23][24] Azhagiya Tamil Magan (2007)[25][26] and Kutty (2010)[27][28] in Tamil, Awaarapan (2007)[29] which earned her Filmfare nomination for best debut actress and Mission Istaanbul (2008)[30] in Hindi and Pokkiri Raja (2010) which is her debut film[31][32][33] in Malayalam.Early life

Career
[edit]
Early career (2001-2003)

Whilst studying her second year at the LSR College in Delhi, Saran got her first opportunity to appear in front of the camera. She eventually quit her studies to participate for the shoot. Following her dance teacher's recommendation, she was given the chance to appear in the music video of Reenu Nathan's Tirakthi Kyon Hawa. The video—shot at Banaras—gave her fame, prompting Ramoji Films to offer her the lead role of Neha in their film Ishtam starring and directed by newcomers. Even before the release of Ishtam, Saran signed four high-budget films including Santosham, Chennakeshava Reddy, Nuvve Nuvve and Tagore with actors Nagarjuna, Balakrishna, Tarun and Chiranjeevi respectively.

Ishtam produced by Usha Kiran Movies and directed by newcomers Raj Kumar and Vikram Kumar,[36] featured her alongside newcomer Charan and Poonam Dhillon. Her performance received positive reviews; an Idlebrain wrote that Shriya "is the main asset of the film. She is very beautiful and extremely talented in acting. She has got wonderful smile and has enticing and expressive eyes. No wonder, Nag has taken her as the heroine in Santosham".[37] Another reviewer from The Hindu cited that, "Shreya looks innocent and pleasing, yet a wee bit mischievous - an impressive debut [...] Both Shreya and Poonam Dhillon steal the scenes whenever they are together".[38] Though the film didn't fare well at the box office, she was noticed by many Telugu producers and directors.[who?]

Her next release was Santosham (2002), co-starring Nagarjuna, Prabhu Deva and Gracy Singh. Her portrayal of Bhanu won appreciation from critics and audience alike; Idlebrain reviewer Jeevi described, "Sreya got the major share of the pie. She is very cute and did the role of Bhanu with élan. Her vivacious attitude and chirpy outlook added the necessary luster to her character. She is a treat to watch".[39] As the film turned out to be high commercial success, celebrating a 100-days-run in theatres,[40] it made Shriya one of the most sought-after actresses in Telugu cinema.[41] Her next release, V. V. Vinayak's Chennakeshava Reddy that co-starred Balakrishna, Tabu and Devayani, became an average grosser. A reviewer from The Hindu noted that, "Only Devayanai who plays Chennakesava's sister has some sensible role connected to the main story, while Tabu and Shriya just play secondary roles"[42] while Idlebrain reviewer wrote, Shriya "is cute and her role is limited to three songs and a few teasing scenes".[43] Saran's final release of 2002 was Nuvve Nuvve with Tarun, which became a blockbuster, whilst also earning her many accolades for her performance as Anjali. While an Idlebrain reviewer, in regards to her performance, noted that Shriya "is at her best in this film. She is very sensual and she expressed the feelings wonderfully with her beautiful eyes. She is sensuality personified",[44] another reviewer from the same site said that "Tarun and Sreya are comfortable and offer portrayals with considerable ease".[45] Telugucinema.com wrote that Shriya's role "has two faces - a rich daughter who has a loving dad, and an innocent lover who has a practical lover", adding that she "did her job really well, balancing both the sides. Her innocent expressions and tender, beautiful face shall take her career a long way [...] The aesthetic [...] that she exhibits has been absent in a heroine's role since long now".[46]

In 2003, Saran's debut Hindi film Tujhe Meri Kasam, starring debutants Ritesh Deshmukh and Genelia D'Souza in lead,[47] released first, a remake of the 2000 Telugu blockbuster Nuvve Kavali,[48] which itself was a remake of a Malayalam film. She enacted a supporting role, which was considered very small compared to that of Genelia, with Bollywood Hungama's reviewer Taran Adarsh citing that "The film could've easily done without [Shriya's] track, who loves the lead man but he doesn't reciprocate".[49] The film garnered poor box office returns,[50] and failed to propel her career in Bollywood.

After her failed Bollywood debut, she again concentrated in South Indian films. She was cast to essay the lead role in the Telugu film Neeku Nenu Naaku Nuvvu opposite Uday Kiran. She played the character of Mahalakshmi, and was praised for her acting and dancing talents. Idlebrain reviewer said that Shriya "is pretty cool as a bubbly girl. She has lots of weeping scenes as well".[51] The Hindu praised her performance, adding that she "simply corners the show. She offers her best performance till date".[52] Collaborating with V. V. Vinayak again, she performed the lead role in his Tagore, a remake of the Tamil film Ramana, which released next. She enacted the role of Devaki, a girl who has a crush on the lead character, essayed by Chiranjeevi that was described as "unimportant" by Jeevi.[53] Following its release, the film broke several box office records,[54] and became the highest-grossing Telugu film at that time.[55] Her subsequent release Ela Cheppanu also earned her many accolades,[56] but only did average business at the box office. Later that year, she made her Tamil film debut in Enakku 20 Unakku 18,[57] again alongside Tarun and Trisha Krishnan.[58] The A. R. Rahman musical became a moderate success at the box-office, failing to gain her more projects in Tamil.
[edit]
Ups and downs (2004-2007)

Saran's first 2004 role was in Nenunnanu opposite Akkineni Nagarjuna, which was a blockbuster and also critically acclaimed.[20] The story of the movie is about how an orphan man gives shelter and assurance to a girl who is also made orphan by her disassociated parents and ran-away lover. She enacted the role of Anu who wants to fulfill her dream to be a singer, her performance in this film being appreciated by critics. Reviewer from Idlebrain said that, "Shriya is sensuous as usual. She played a very vital role in this film and she did justice to her role. But she seems to be losing the freshness and tenderness off late."[59], another reviewer from IndiaGlitz mention that, "Nenunnanu is the first rate performance of the lead artistes [...] Shreya as Anu is refreshing and pleasing."[60] and reviewer from a AllIndianSite said that, "Shriya performed extremely well as the entire movie moves around her character [...] Shriya had only one duet with the hero".[61] Later that year, she appeared in her first lead female role in a Hindi film Thoda Tum Badlo Thoda Hum, which was remake of Telugu film Anandam alongside Arya Babbar produced by Ramoji Rao. She plays the role of Rani, who hates and keeps fighting with her neighbor Raja, but soon developing a love towards him. Indiaglitz said that Shriya "reminds us of Genelia D'Souza in "Tujhe Meri Kasam". But that could be because the ambience and the lovers' squabbles are near- identical"[62] and Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama said that Shriya "is a fine actress and leaves a strong impression".[63] Her next Hindi release was Shukriya: Till Death Do Us Apart alongside Aftab Shivdasani, Anupam Kher, Indraneil Sengupta and Rati Agnihotri.[64][65] She played the character of Sanam K. Jindal. Bollywood Hungama's reviewer Taran Adarsh mention her performance as "Shriya Saran is an actress to watch. She not only looks pretty and photogenic, but also enacts her part with amazing confidence. Her expressions in the emotional sequences deserve special mention".[66] The former was also a failure at the box office,[67] whilst the latter was an average grosser, failing to gain her any attention. Her final Telugu release of 2004 Arjun with Mahesh Babu, Keerthi Reddy, Raja, Prakash Raj and Saritha which was directed by Gunasekhar in a high budget. The film is known for his Meenakshi Amman Temple set which was build in the cost of 4 crores by National Film Awards winner Thotta Tharani.[68] Saran, who played the love interest of the lead charcter, was criticized that her role was very limited compared to Keerthi Reddy who play the sister of the lead character.[69] The film, in spite of positive responses, failed to recover the film's high budget.[20]

In 2005, she had ten releases, nine of which being Telugu films. Balu ABCDEFG opposite Pawan Kalyan was the first release and became an average grosser in India but this was the first Telugu film to be released in South Africa after 40 years and received overwhelming response there. After her next four Telugu films were average at box office, her film Chatrapati opposite Prabhas, released and became a successful venture and one of the biggest hits in her career. Meanwhile, she made her comeback in Kollywood through the film Mazhai, a remake of the Telugu blockbuster film Varsham, produced by S. P. B. Charan with Jayam Ravi starring in the lead role.[70]. She essayed the role of Shailaja a middle class girl who love rain so much as she could interact with it. The film was an average grosser at the box-office.[71] Though the movie didn't become successful, her performance was received well by critics. Sify reviewer wrote that Shriya "with her hour-glass figure has flaunted it well but the girl somehow lacks screen presence",[72] while IndiaGlitz said that Shreya "is a welcome addition to Kollywood. A glamorous actress, she is sure to go a long way here"[73] and Now Running wrote that "Shriya is the cynosure to all eyes especially when she dances. Her dance movements are graceful and natural. On-screen chemistry between Ravi and Shriya is perfect"[74]. She next appeared with Ravi Teja in Bhageeratha, following which she had been appearing only in cameo roles and item numbers throughout 2006 and 2007, such as Boss opposite Akkineni Nagarjuna, Game opposite Vishnu, Devadasu opposite Ram, Munna opposite Prabhas and her last film Tulasi opposite Venkatesh. She also made a cameo appearance in the National Film Award-winning Bommalata.

Her only 2006 release, in which she did a "full-fledged role", was the Tamil film Thiruvilayadal Arambam with Dhanush which became her first successful Tamil film. She then beat other top actresses for the much coveted role opposite Rajinikanth in S. Shankar's Sivaji: The Boss which was the most expensive Indian film at that time. Saran then made her comeback in Hindi with Awaarapan alongside Emraan Hashmi which was the first joint production between India and Pakistan. The film was successful at the box office.

Later that year she appeared in one more Tamil film, Azhagiya Tamil Magan opposite Vijay which turned to be an average hit. She played the role of Abinaya and was praised by critics for her performance. A Oneindia.in reviewer wrote, "Shriya is another sweet surprise of the movie", adding that, "she is not appearing as a glamour doll, but performs well in a meaty role on par with the hero",[75] while Sify wrote that Shriya "is a pure eye candy and emotes sufficiently well, especially in the crucial climax scene" adding that she "has a meaty role and has as much footage as the hero and her character is the crux around which the film revolves".[76] However, Rediff criticized her, citing that "her acting is as bad as her looks are good", furthermore adding that "the only convincing portion of the movie is when Shriya has to act as if she doesn't have a clue on who the love of her life is".[77] Besides, a reviewer from Behindwoods, wrote that Shriya "has a good role and she has done a decent job and looks angelic",[78] meanwhile Indiaglitz said that Shriya, "arguably possessing the most stunning and sexy figure among today’s heroines is simply ravishing".[79]
[edit]
Recent work (2008-present)

In 2008, she made a special appearance in the Vadivelu-starrer Indiralohathil Na Azhagappan which turn out to be her only Tamil release of 2008. She then acted in the Hindi film Apoorva Lakhia's Mission Istanbul with Zayed Khan, Vivek Oberoi and Shabbir Ahluwalia, which also starred Abhishek Bachchan and Sunil Shetty in guest appearance. The film was a hit at the box office. She played the character of Anjali Sagar which was inspired by the character of Romila Dutta played by Preity Zinta in the film Lakshya;[80] a journalist who desires to have a child with her husband, which leads to their separation, since he is reluctant. The film's main theme is about anti terrorism. Rediff and Bollywood Hungama critics said that her character was totally wasted and also had a weak characterization.[81][82] Saran then made her Hollywood debut in Ashok Amritraj's The Other End of the Line, becoming one of the first South Indian actresses to accomplish this feat.[83] She played the role of Priya Sethi who works as a telephone operator in an India Call Centre, while acting alongside Jesse Metcalfe,[84] Anupham Kher and Tara Sharma. Shriya's performance was praised by critic, particularly her on-screen chemistry with Jesse Metcalfe.[85]

Saran's first 2009 release, was Ek - The Power of One with Bobby Deol, the Hindi remake of the successful Telugu film Athadu, which unlike Athadu was just an average grosser. She then made her comeback in Tamil, appearing in Thoranai opposite Vishal, which, too, was an average grosser at box office. She then bagged the role of Subbulakshmi opposite Vikram in the much-anticipated film Kanthaswamy which is also considered a moderate success.

In 2010, she first appeared in the Tamil film Kutty which is a remake of Telugu blockbuster Arya. The film was declared hit at box office.[28] Her subsequent release was K. S. Ravikumar's Jaggubhai, in which she essayed the role of Monisha, a spoilt brat and the daughter of the protagonist, played by R. Sarathkumar. Her role in this film gained many accolades although the film did not fare well at box office. Saran then also made her Malayalam debut with Pokkiri Raja in which she appeared opposite Mammootty and Prithviraj.[86] The film created big hype among the audience in Kerala and was declared a super hit in the first week, breaking the record in Malayalam cinema by grossing over 2.21 crores in its first week of release surpassing Twenty:20.[87][88] Saran herself was appreciated for her performance, despite appearing in a short role.[89] She enacted the first lead role in a Telugu film after five years,[90] in the action-comedy film Don Seenu opposite Ravi Teja.[91][92] Saran played the role of the character's love interest, who dreams of becoming world's number one don. Reviewers praised Saran for her glamorous look and chirpy attitude added that she will become as the asset of the movie's box office success. Sify wrote that Shriya "is highly glamorous and seductive all the way. She is a big asset to the commercial run of the film. Appearing in both traditional and modern dresses, she steals the show in songs and romantic scenes",[93] Indiaglitz wrote that Shriya had done "a decent job", given her "character’s scope".[94] Meanwhile, Rediff said that "Shriya looks glamorous and gorgeous. Coming back to Telugu cinema after a hiatus, Shriya manages to sustain attention though she doesn't have much to do"[95] and reviewer from Oneindia.in said that Shreya "is another asset for the movie. It is a treat to watch her on screen with her sexy costumes. Nonetheless, she even stoles the show with her acting skills".[96] The film eventually became one of the top grossers of 2010 and went to celebrate 50 days of successful theatrical run.[97][98] The film is considered one of Saran's most important films in terms of gross collection.[99] Saran then had a special appearance as a dancer in a casino in the S. J. Suryaah-directed action film Komaram Puli,[100] for which she was paid a huge sum of money.[101]
