At the head of a silent procession, Kamla Devi set out this morning from home with the body of her murdered husband, revenue inspector Ram Kumar Yadav.
The numbers swelled as people from every home in Majhwara, 30 km from Sultanpur, joined the procession. Angry, they tried to block a road near the village to demand the arrest of Yadav’s killers but police stepped in. While residents argued with the police, District Magistrate Pinki Jowel and SP A K Raghav landed there.
Spotting Jowel, Kamla walked up to the officers. The DM stunned policemen by reaching out and hugging Kamla.
The last time they met, Kamla had gone to Jowel for help in filing nomination papers for the post of the village pradhan. She had been receiving threats not to contest against Sobhawati Devi, a candidate being backed by BSP MLA Chandrabhadra Singh alias Sonu Singh — the MLA is among those named in a case of murder which was filed after Yadav, kidnapped by men in a SUV from Bikapur in Faizabad, was found dead on Tuesday morning.
